WATCH: Denis Mukwege, the Afrolutionary gynae receives his Sakharov Prize today

Last month we covered Mukwege’s afrolutionary work in the DRC, noting that he created a series of clinics that help women who have been victims of rape due to rebel attacks:

But just to brush up your memory, Denis Mukwege is a 59 year old leading expert in treating victims of rape and violent sexual aggression. His hospital in Panzi, Democratic Republic of Congo not only treats victims but also empowers them in a social, economical and legal basis. Some patients can take their cases to court – where some of them won, other victims are taught skills and are put back into schools. so far, Mukwege’s efforts have healed over 30 000 rape patients in the area, caring an average of 10 patients a day for over the past decade.

In a form of praising his efforts, the European Parliament will award his with the Sakharov prize, a top European prize for human rights.The Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought is awarded each year by the European Parliament. It was set up in 1988 to honour people and organisations defending human rights and fundamental freedoms. Last year the prize was awarded to Malala Yousafzaï, the Pakistani campaigner for girls’ education.
